“But I Am Still Growing”

The purpose of this program is to build better relationships so your teammates can better manage their resources.  At the same time, the program will motivate and inspire the participants to grow into more effective professionals as well as more effective people!

“But I Am Still Growing” addresses the skills necessary to communicate more effectively to a wide range of people…from co-workers to clients to friends and family.  Each participant benefits by learning to simplify the process and personalize communications.  At the conclusion of this program, each participant will be able to:

  • Communicate more effectively
  • Build more productivity and harmony in the work environment
  • Understand his/her teammates as people not as units of production
  • Identify the 4 Behavioral Styles
  • Design strategies to adjust to the other person’s style
  • Understand the importance of life-long learning
  • Use his/her style to be more creative
  • Have fun as they learn!

The four behavioral styles will be defined, discussed, and demonstrated.  Each person will complete a “personal assessment” to identify strengths and weaknesses.  He/she will then learn about the similarities and differences in others.  This leads to building better business and personal relationships.  It fosters better communication and interpersonal skills.

For example, would you communicate to a “Donald Trump-type” person in the same manner as you would a “Laura Bush-type” person?  Would you relate to a “Bill Cosby-type” in the same way as you would to a “Sherlock Holmes-type?”  Participants learn the differences in people and how to “adjust” their own communication style to increase both productivity and harmony.

In this educationally sound and fast-paced session, participants are actively involved in the learning process.  Each completes a short paper and pencil profile to determine his/her specific communication style.  Once this is understood, they are actively engaged in using this information to communicate more effectively.

Each person learns to grow as a professional as well as a person.  They will learn as they laugh!

V. J. Smith

V.J. Smith has been a professional speaker for more than a decade. He is also a published author.  Smith has also been a bill collector, solar collector salesman and a fundraiser.  “Being a child of the early ‘70s, it took me a little while to figure out what I wanted to do with my life,” he says.

As for his speaking ability, he credits that with growing up with three brothers and four sisters.  “You had to learn to talk loud and fast or you didn’t get much to eat,” Smith muses.  Drawing on his lifetime experiences, Smith peppers his talks with anecdotes and personal stories to illustrate key points.  He feels he is better equipped to be a storyteller, not a preacher.

Smith honed his speaking skills through his membership in Toastmaster’s International.  On two occasions he was a finalist in that organization’s ‘World’s Championship of Public Speaking. ’

A 1978 graduate of South Dakota State University, Smith spent the decade of the 1980s working for the Allied Signal Aerospace Company in Kansas City, MO.  He returned to his alma mater in 1990 to serve as Assistant Athletic Director for the SDSU athletic program.  He was appointed Executive Director of the SDSU Alumni Association in 1996 and resigned from that position in January 2007 due to the overwhelming requests for speaking appearances.

Smith’s book “The Richest Man in Town” that was published in 2005.  His latest book, “Jackrabbit Tales” was released in April 2009.

“The Richest Man in Town”

This talk is based on the life of ‘Marty’, a memorable man who ran a cash register at Wal-Mart.  He was considered rich because he was loved and respected, but most of all, he was content with every aspect of his life, no regrets.  Marty’s simple philosophies show what happens when you take the time to be kind and compassionate.  All that you give, you get back, and more. Audience members will go on an emotional roller coaster ride… guaranteed.

“Dealing with Change”

The only guarantee you have in life and in the work place is that change is going to happen and it will affect you.  How it affects you is up to you.

In this seminar, you will learn to not only accept change, but to be a change agent.  Why fight it if you know it is inevitable?  Why not welcome it, even look for it.  The adage of “If it ain’t broke, why fix it?” is all wrong.  Start looking from the angle of “If I can’t fix it, it ain’t broke!!”

Come along on a ride of ideas and opportunity acceptance in the area of welcoming and inviting change in to what we do each and every day.
